I’m a Fred Thompson supporter, and for the worst of reasons: I like his style.

There’s also the fact that the rest of the Republican field makes Paris Hilton look substantive and electable. Come on, you know it’s true; this is 1996 all over again. Without Fred Thompson in the pack the Republican National Convention is going to be the race to elect the next loser. Who else are you going to back? Mitt Romney? John McCain (If McCain’s your man I suggest you skip politics entirely and simply trot on down to Miami Ink and ask for the antichrist special)? Giuliani? Ron Paul?

As much as you might agree with the policies of those listed above they lack the one thing needed to implement said policies: electability.

None of them are electable.

Why? Well the honest reason is that, just like the post-Nixon era (and as much as we may not want to admit it) the Republican party is walking around with one hell of a black eye right now. We’ve soaked up punches like Ted Kennedy soaking up manhattans at an open bar for eight years. The faith is wavering, and every one of the other candidates carries that taint with them. We need another Reagan. We need someone who can communicate the conservative agenda to the masses in an effective manner while still being seen as a man of the people, above corruption, and set apart from the dirty business of politics (but who is still perceived as effective politically). We need someone who can seize the bully-pulpit by the throat and not let it go until they pry it out of his cold, dead hands. We need someone who is not afraid to address the nation and explain why it is that we need to do what it is that we need to do.

That man is Fred Thompson.

(Now, allow me a quick divergence here, just to get the record straight, I am not exactly a Republican. I am a conservative libertarian who believes in winning, so I vote Republican rather than just soaking my ballot in Bacardi 151 and lighting it on fire.)

So what recommends Thompson other than his ability to communicate a message in a no bullshit manner?

Well, being the thorough researcher I am, let’s take a look at his record, shall we?Everything you wanted to know about Fred Thompson, but were afraid to askNow, I don’t agree with everything in there, but by God his bona fides as a conservative are pretty unquestionable. The man has charisma, he has presence, he was pretty damned good in the Tom Clancy movie, and he’s had the character and courage to stand up for his conservative beliefs while working in one of the most liberal industries in the United States (Hollywood, not the Senate).

We need a win in November, and we need a win by someone who can explain to them why the War on Terror is still important and why we need to keep on fighting it. We need someone out there beating the drum from the Oval Office telling people why America is still good. We need to skip Carter and slide right into the new Reagan era.

We need Fred Thompson.

He’s the bandwagon I’m gonna hop on (well, as soon as he gets it rolling).
