As a kid I loved Robert Conrad’s portrayal of Pappy Boyington in Baa Baa Black Sheep. It would appear that many of the younger (and more clueless) residents of my state don’t share my enthusiasm. As reported by World Net Daily the utterly ignorant University of Washington student senate rejected a proposal to erect a memorial to the fighter ace and Congressional Medal of Honor awardee who volunteered with the Flying Tigers and sent 26 enemy fighters blazing into hell.

That’s not exactly shocking, but some of the senators comments were.

When the proposal’s sponsor Andrew Everett commented that Col. Boyington “had many of the qualities that the University of Washington hoped to produce in its students.” Senator Jill Edwards responded that she:

didn’t believe a member of the United States Marine Corps was an example of the sort of person UW wanted to produce.

I can understand how Ms. Edwards would be perplexed by the values instilled by The Corps since –by her own admission– she has no sense of duty, honor, or loyalty even to her own student senate or her constituents. In fact, it’s shocking that she could tear herself away from her math homework to be bothered to object. Here is her report to her constituents:

In the last three senate meetings a lot of important things were accomplished. A resolution was passed in support of cake and people were elected to positions where they will have limited to no actual power. Your illustrious senator did her math homework, Italian homework, and math homework in each meeting respectively. I also voted in support of the cake. In addition to the homework, which I successfully complete in senate,

Ms. Edwards goes on to observe of fellow senators:

They should listen to our former president Abe Lincoln who said “Tis better to be silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.”

Perhaps she should have considered that remark before she stopped doing her homework and made idiotic comments about the Marines.

She continues to take the business of the student senate seriously, as she illustrates with comments like these:

Since my last senate report a lot of really cool and exciting things have happened. None of these things happened in the Senate…Oh, on a personal note, cute boy who was in one of my classes last year is now a senator, providing a slight incentive to show up to meetings.

And she supports the important stuff:

I liked the resolution in support of a late-night coffee shop, although i did suggest we not call it a 24-hour coffee shop when it closed at 4am every night. i was really happy to have such an important contribution to the political process.

Her latest entry indicates she may be re-thinking her decision to open her mouth and prove herself a fool:

I apparently upset a lot of people when I opposed a memorial for a Colonel from WWII who had recieved a Medal of Honor and who was a UW graduate. This was the main discussion and rather than go into it, I think I would rather post some of the charming and sweet letters I have recieved since then.

Darlin’ you ain’t seen nothin’ yet…

Of course, she is not the only idiot on the student senate. Vice President Ashley Miller, a Senior and International Studies major, displayed a monumental bias whan she commented that:

many monuments at UW already commemorate rich white men

Riiiiight. Col. Boyington was just in the Flying Tigers for the money and the chance to oppress minorities and women…

Student senator Karl Smith wanted to make a kinder, gentler memorial by removing any reference to Boyington’s 26 kills.

Melissa Aar said she opposed the section of the proposal that would have required progress be made by 11 January 2008 due to the signifigance of the date.

The signifigance of the date? Hey Melissa, if you are thinking of 11 September then you are an idiot; if not then Susan Lindaur’s birthday is only signifigant to you…

If you feel like contacting the queen bee of the dumbass hive you can e-mail Jill Edwards at jae6@u.washington.edu . If you want to E-mail the anti-richwhitemale VP Ashley Miller you can do so at asuwvp@u.washington.edu

Let ‘em know how much you appreciate their grasp of history and respect for their protectors.

I am disturbed by the failings of the ASUW senators in this case. However, I believe that they were correct in voting down building a monument. Seeing as the UW is a public university strapped for funds due to state-level cuts, it has many other things it desperately needs to spend money on.

At the same time, though, I think that introducing a resolution to commemorate Col. Boyington and honor his service, sans a memorial, would have been a prudent measure that the senators did not take.

Lastly, I would like to point out that Senator Edwards- quotes used in this article are from the UW Honors Croquet League site, all of which is very tongue-in-cheek humor. Put into context of the entire page, what Edwards wrote is really not that disturbing. Further put into context of how little power the ASUW Senate really has, it is even less disturbing.

  9. on 16 Feb 2006 at 3:56 pm GoldFalcon

Was she being humorous then when she said that she ignored the seante meetings in order to do her homework? Or intimated that many of the senators were idiots? The readers can decide for themselves by clicking the links by the referenced quotes which will take them to the Honors Croquet League page.

As to the state-level cuts, being one of the residents who either voted for the cuts or against increased taxes, my guess is that the cost for the memorial would have been signifigantly less than the production cost for The Vagina Monolouges.

It isn’t a matter of inadequate funding, it’s a matter of skewed priorities.

I am appalled! It’s too bad good space at our universities is taken up by spoiled brats who havn’t a clue what this country is based upon. If they cared to pay attention to history (which I’m fairly certain is still a requirement for most college degrees), they would find this nation’s principles were founded by a group of young radicals who couldn’t afford to be polite to their aggressors; people like George Washington, who risked all for the sake of freedom.
Are you, horrible spoiled children, next going to attack George Washington for his part in the deaths of so many British soldiers during this county’s revolution? You might as well!
I am a nurse and my business is to save lives, yet, I have nothing but thanks for our military personel - past and present- who make it possible for me to live in such a great country.
What is wrong with you people?!!!
What would you do in the instance of an invasion of this country, heaven forbid, with people like the empty-headed Jill Edwards progressing to positions of authority. (Good luck with the 24 hour coffee shop thing, Jill! Hope all that thinking doesn’t kill the spirochete trying to make the synapse between your only two brain cells). Would you be crying for help from our military? Or would you have the strength of your skewed convictions and lay down with your arms across your chests and let the enemy run over you? Now, don’t be hypocritical. You can’t enjoy all the freedoms with out the responsibility. You people used to be referred to as “educated idiots”, but you are obviously “un-educated idiots”. Do yourselves and everyone else a favor: either take advantage of where you are (if you have the capacity), and get educated, or get out and stop taking up space!

I am so happy we live in a country where someone can speak their mind openly and not be ostracized ofr speaking it. WAIT A MINUTE!!! THATS NOT TRUE AT ALL!! But I digress. Although she obviously worded it in a poor manner, Jill has made a cunning observation on our society. Why did the senators wish to honor this man over all the other UW grads who have served? They made just as great sacrifices, the just didn’t kill as many people. We all love our service men and women, veterans, and in Jill’s case grandfathers, but I beleive we should honor them all equaly. Jill was only trying to argue this, and in the heat of the debate she worded it poorly. She brings up the question of heroism and military service. As americans we love and honor those who fight and have fought for us, but are our best fighters heros simply because they are the best? You may have an opinion as I have an opinion and as Jill Edwards has an opinion. This type of debate is what makes our country so great. Voltaire once said “I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend, to the death, your right to say it.” Many people disagree with what Jill has said, but who will stand up and defend her right to say it?

    Dear Ms. Edwards,
I’m sending you this message in regards to your recent rejection of the proposed memorial for WWII Ace, Medal of Honor recipient, and alumni Colonel Boyington. I would like to point out that you are destroying the character of the university and damaging its reputation. In addition, you are a disgrace to this nation, the student body, and your generation. As you have no doubt heard from others, your comments regarding the memorial trigger disgust from freedom loving, free-thinking, educated individuals who have worked hard to not only build a university that is well-respected, but also a nation as great as ours. I don’t know how you slipped through a crack and gained admission to UW, but the only honorable path for you to remedy this terrible transgression of yours is to apologize to the rest of the UW’s student body, the student senate, WA state taxpayers, alumni such as myself, veterans, the remaining family of the honorable Col. Boyington, and resign from your position within the student senate. Continuing on the road to recovery, you should familiarize yourself with the high personal standards, moral values, integrity, and intestinal fortitude the Marine Corps instills in its soldiers and write a research paper stating your findings. Secondly, you should enroll in pertinent WWII history classes to grasp how much our grandparents suffered, sacrificed, and drove on during the period, not to mention how close we were to losing the war, hopefully gaining an appreciation for the Greatest Generation. Thirdly, I would suggest you personally interview what remains of our WWII veterans (every last one of them a hero) and write a paper summarizing their experiences and thoughts. Lastly, if you had the courage and insight to realize how damaging, unpatriotic, and insulting your actions were, you might spearhead a new effort to recognize this great soldier for what he was–a great hero. At the very least, we are obligated to erect a monument in his memory. The irony behind your disgraceful behavior is that you fail to recognize the fact you owe this man, and others like him, your freedom. I know I do–the difference separating us is complete ignorance on your part.

    -UW Alumni Class of ‘05

  14. on 20 Feb 2006 at 11:34 am jet blast

    UW Alumni Class of 05
I have read hundreds of messages about Jill Edwards and the University of Washington. In addition to the above: The Merit Scholarship corporation should be contacted and pull her scholarship. If they don’t, then the 500 companies who fund them should pull this funding. Many of the Fortune 500 companies have former Marines as CEO’s. The Preisdent of UW should resign, he has created an atmoshere of disrespect to florish at the school. The Alumni should monitor the selection process of all applicants at the University. The Alumni should under take a through investigation of the courses students are required to take for graduation. The Alumni should construst a DON’T HIRE LIST of every Student senator who voted against the resolution..and publish there names. If the University has a zero tolerance policy then Ashely Miller should be expelled for her racial slur.
There are 120 national cemetaries in America where the 16.5 million men who served in WWII are burried and dying at the rate of 1000 a day.
Every member of the student senate should have to visit 3 of these cemetaries. They should have to visit a Military hospital to talk with the wounder Marines returning from Iraq. They should have to donate 1000 dollars to the WOUNDER WARRIOR PROGRAM.
The erection of a Monument to honor those who scaraficed so much for us and the entire world should be a honor. The University of Washington should not be allowed to share this honor.

I am so happy we live in a country where someone can speak their mind openly and not be ostracized ofr speaking it.

She has the freedom to say what she likes, I have the freedom to ridicule her. It cuts both ways.

Although she obviously worded it in a poor manner, Jill has made a cunning observation on our society. Why did the senators wish to honor this man over all the other UW grads who have served? They made just as great sacrifices, the just didn’t kill as many people.

Well, you see, in war killing more enemies generally equals winning, which is why killing bunches of ‘em is considered laudable behavior. That aside, what you say is untrue; Col. Boyington’s Medal of Honor and time as a POW distinguish him from other veterans.

Jill was only trying to argue this, and in the heat of the debate she worded it poorly.

That’s unmitigated bullshit. She was arguing against the idea that military service was honorable and in so doing uttered a reprehensible sentiment, not a poorly worded one.

Many people disagree with what Jill has said, but who will stand up and defend her right to say it?

Well, the United States Marines will and are, as are all servicepeople and it’s astounding that you don’t make that connection.

  16. on 20 Feb 2006 at 8:19 pm Sinbad the Sailor

All i know is I’m reading a lot of “The Alumni should constru[c]t a DON’T HIRE LIST of every Student senator who voted against the resolution..and publish the[ir] names.” “Ashely Miller should be expelled for her racial slur,” and “[the senators] should have to donate 1000 dollars to the WOUNDER WARRIOR PROGRAM.” “The Merit Scholarship corporation should be contacted and pull [Jill’s] scholarship.” I don’t beleive these are things that SHOULD happen to someone who speaks freely in a free country. As for the president of UW I believe he can and should do nothing about the “atmosphere of disrespect” because this would be counteracting all the work of our military servicmen as GoldFalcon has pointed out. The Marines have stood up for this freedom with their actions, but some naval vets aren’t with their words. Thanks for your service, Jet Blast, I appreciate it, i just disagree with some things you are saying.

We have to understand that in some cases a university is where children grow up. Many times this takes longer than a semester or two and in a few cases it just doesn’t happen. This young student is still in her formative years and while I hope that some day she will mature into a productive member of society, I do not hold her as representative of the student body at the U of W. I only hope that others who are able to see the errors of her point of view can as compassionately as possible let her know that she is wrong. Attacking or villifying this young girl will only manage to stunt her growth, or possibly even have her enter the Peter Pan land of a pampered overeducated victim who will never understand that she should not belittle the sacrafices that others make for her.

I hope that we can find a bit of pity for this girl who has enjoyed living under the umbrella of freedom provided by men such as Col. Boyington and can not bring herself to even try to understand what has been given her. We need to understand that the pampered youth shown here are more concerned with their hair and their clothes than they are with anything that has gone on outside of their own little world at the university.

  18. on 21 Feb 2006 at 11:36 am Jack

Sinbad, your comments reminds me very much of the Dixie Chick flap, after one of the young ladies made a rude and childish remark about the President. Many people were very vocal in their displeasure at her remark. This led to many of her supporters complaining that since she had the right to say what she pleased, no one had a right to criticize her for it. In short, free speech for her, but not for those who disagree with her.

This, of course, is ridiculous. While Jill Edwards is certainly free to express her opinions about the men and women who have served this country in general and about Greg Boyington in particular, I am also free to express my opinion of her.

She said some things that I, as a military man, find deeply offensive. Looks like many others were offended by what she said as well. As a result, she is now being chastised in this forum for her remarks. This doesn’t quite equal “ostracization,” as you put it. Let’s not be dramatic here. She isn’t a victim. You’re trying to pass her remarks off as a poorly worded “cunning observation of our society.” No sale, my friend.

What she said hasn’t been taken out of context or misunderstood due to being “poorly worded.” We know what she said, we understand how she meant it. And we have the right to express our opinons about it. Like GF said, that knife cuts both ways.

I sick to death of hearing excuses for the “poor young misguided college students”. Wake up..what does it take for the veterans and Americans who realize what is at stake to fight back. In 1971 the 26th Amendant was ratified. The Democracts spear headed the lowering of the voting age to 18…why? Because they thought that 11 million more young voters would help defeat the Republicans. It didn’t. But from that monent on…the college trash are not just imature spoiled pimple faced leaches…they can determine public policy and political power. These liberal mouth pieces for the academia should be ostrasized with extreme prejudice. This mind set is the same as those demonstrating against the war at the hospitals where wounded Marines recover. This is the same mind set as the low life trash that are demonstrating at National Cemetaries…disrupting the funerals of our fallen.
