Why Diplomacy Never Works When It Matters

I don’t understand diplomacy and diplomats. The only time it works is when one or both parties aren’t that committed to the dispute to begin with. Diplomats must willingly ignore this simple and obvious fact of history in order to ply their trade. And what is that trade? Words.
As they displayed in response to the Iranian Presidents call for Israel and America to be wiped off the map, diplomats deal in words and rhetoric in such monumentaly ineffective ways it would be laughable if it weren’t so scary.
The sad part is that the diplomats seem to think that “a strong statement of condemnation” is as good as a good sock to the nose. They think they are taking a stand against the Islamic radicals by issuing a statement about how unacceptable a statement is. That’s why European governments can’t stomach Israel, their diplomacy is generally followed closely by munitions.
You know what won’t stop Iran? Telling them how bad they are. You know what will stop Iran? War. We need to stop dancing around this subject. What the Iranian President said is no different from what the vast majority of the region thinks. Guess what, they are already at war with us and have been for thirty years, we need to stop playing catch-up and take the game to them.
Of course, in our current political climate that’s about as likely as Martha Stewart’s Apprentice getting picked up for a second season, but that doesn’t make it any less necessary.
Don’t be so sure of today’s political climate, my friend. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s foreboding of Israel was nothing more than part of the interminable pillow talk of the modern day Middle-East.
However, I do believe that Ahmadinejad set into motion a series of upcoming events that will end modern-day Iran as we now know it when he said “And God willing, with the force of God behind it, we shall soon experience a world without the United States and Zionism….”
Though I believe Bush’s current administration has negatvely forced us into the world standing we find ourselves in now, we stand here none-the-less. And in that standing, it has become fashionable, almost compulsory, for authoritative figures to attack us this way to give themselves a sense of self-empowerment.
Now, an insurgent “military” leader or a political figure-head making these statements has been the norm, and become a source of great humor for me. However, this is the first time that someone so high-ranking in a government who was so far up our shit list in the first place has the nuts to push ol’ ‘Gdubb and crew’s buttons this way.
You see, what Ahmadinejad is betting on is that we will resort to diplomacy as our last resort, because our military is so stretched in the region. What he isn’t counting on is the fact that our government has been making a project out of his country for a while now. ….He’s setting it in motion…. Unless something drastic happens within the next year, I fully expect the next “shock and awe” campaign to be taking place within the glistening borders of downtown Teheran within 18 months.
Our current political climate of “get the troops out” will quickly change when this turd keeps spitting out his “anti-zionism” propoganda on CNN and FoxNews every night.
