Tell Me Again…

How it is up to a patient to decide when to end his life. Tell me again how there is no culture of death. Tell me again about all of the safeguards in place to prevent the priests in the Church of Modern Science from exercising their “best judgment” when it comes to living or dying. This article (not to mention CNN’s sympathetic tone) seem to indicate that your doctor just might not give a rat’s ass if you want to live if he decides it would be better for you to die.

My only question: If it was truly better that some patients be euthanized because the situation was just that bad, why were there no dead doctors or nurses found with needle marks in their arms?

Don’t think it’s right to kill yourself BUT, I also don’t think the Feds should have anything to do with this decision. Just like abortion this is a states rights issue. It’s a sad trend the USA is on with the central government taking on more and more of state legal territory.

I got a different spin from the article…I got the “you are going to die a painful, horrible death in a dead hospital…let me put you out of your misery”. I believe it is wrong to lump that into any discussion of euthenasia…this is an issue of people doing what they thing is best to relieve suffering during an abnormal event. This is not an issue of a critically ill patients in a fully functioning hospital or a very low percentage possiblity of a patient getting better in the face of evidence to suggest otherwise while the family fights over them. This is dead hospital with dying people who are suffering. The living and healthy will always do better in those situations than those that are in desperate need of hospital resources that are in need of power and other resources to maintain their critical conditions.

Not that I, or anyone else but those doctors and nurses at the facility know what really happened there at that hospital. I applaud the LA Attorney General…I think he has the right idea.

And you very well may be correct in your analysis of the “Church of Modern Science” and their goals to render all decisions unto themselves, but I don’t think it is fair to take any issue of death at a doctors hand and lump it into the euthanasia list… No more fair than to take any battlefield kill and make a war crime out of it.

    Weeelll,

I would say that you are right Toni -with a qualifier. The qualifier is that it is not a matter for government at all, state or federal. It is a matter that ought to be between patient and doctor only. But, I am not naive enough to believe that that can happen so it should be an issue left to the individual states, but I don’t think the political climate in the U.S. will allow that. If two states have differring opinions on a matter it is almost always thought to be a constitutional crisis worthy of the SCOTUS.

    CL,

I would simply point out that I don’t ever want a doctor to even think that he has the authority to make that decision for me. Notice in the article that the eyewitness states that the doctors who allegedly administered the lethal dose said “I’m going to give you something for the pain.” NOT “I’m going to give you something that will kill you.”

If the eyewitness is telling the truth then the patients weren’t consulted about the decision made by the doctors to end their lives.

What is the most important information I should know about Clonazepam?
    • Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Clonazepam will cause drowsiness and may cause dizziness. If you experience drowsiness or dizziness, avoid these activities.
    • Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking Clonazepam. Alcohol may also increase your risk of having a seizure.
    • Do not stop taking Clonazepam suddenly. This could cause seizures and withdrawal symptoms. Talk to your doctor if you need to stop treatment with Clonazepam.

    What is Clonazepam?
    • Clonazepam is in a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. Clonazepam affects chemicals in your brain that may become unbalanced and cause seizures.
    • Clonazepam is used to treat seizures.
    • Clonazepam may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
