B-Sides: Me Edition (Single)
July 9th, 2005 by GoldFalcon
I comment a lot on music, sometimes pretty harshly. I am not above offerring my own work up for critique, so here is a tune I wrote yesterday:
(*Note*: This is just barely demo quality. You’ll hear some mistakes. I did everything in one take with the exception of the lead guitar parts, which were a different track that I laid down in one take, mistakes and all. That’s in keeping with the spirit of The B-Sides. I’d rather hear mistakes than over produced, pitch-shifted, fixed-in-the-mix crap. You may think the song is crap, but it certainly won’t be because it is overproduced.)
Click Me —> My Pretty Ones
Here are the lyrics:
My Pretty Ones
He slides out of the driveway,
points his headlights toward the highway
still tryin’ hard not to make that sound.Got two in bed and one at the door,
pretty soon there’ll be one more.
They’re all cryin’, askin’ him to stay.He says “Oh, no, my pretty ones.
There’s a need for men and guns,
and it ain’t enough to sit and pray.
Sometimes even good men go away.”Yeah, Daddy’s gone a soldier,
got an Eagle on his shoulder,
flag on his arm and he’s gonna make ‘em pay.Back home they’re scared of fightin’
sayin’ “You don’t have to die, son”.
The kids say “Daddy, are you comin’ home today?”He says “Oh, no, my pretty ones.
There’s a need for men and guns,
there’s just too much at stake.
There’s some things in life you gotta face.”Well there’s a letter in a locker,
when she gets it, it’ll drop her.
It’s sittin’ underneath some baby boots she made.It says “Oh, no, my pretty ones,
I guess this means my time is done.
Like gypsies who never stay,
Daddies only come to go away.”
Here is the story:
I was reading Macbeth and there’s a point when Macduff is informed that Macbeth has slaughtered his family that he is in shocked disbelief. He asks the messenger for confirmation that all of his children have been killed by asking “All of my pretty ones?” As a Dad, that line really hit me.
I was also re-reading Stephen Ambrose’s “Band of Brothers” where he relates the story of one of the three married men of Easy Company searching through the mussette bags of fellow paratroopers killed on D-Day. During the search he came across a knitted pair of baby booties. Being a recent father this sobered him up and killed his desire to loot the belongings of his dead comrades. It also struck me as very poignant. Those two were the inspiration for the song.
The song was beautiful and the words so touching. Your voice is beautiful, I have never heard you sing before, but I want to hear you again. Having grown up with a former Marine, I was taught a love for our country and the people who willing serve it, so the words really struck me… I thank the Lord daily for all the people who leave their families behind to insure that I will remain free…and I thank you, Brian, for doing the same thing! thank you for getting this song out so that others can remember the sacrifice, not just of life, but of family, and home, so that they can be free!
Howdy Raechel!
Thanks so much for dropping by, and for your flattering comments. I’m glad you enjoyed the song. I thank the Lord for people who have the courage of their convictions and who are willing to live what they believe. You land squarely in that category. Your support is invaluable to the current crop of fine young men and women putting it on the line every day.
Awesome. Words fail me now.
What a beautiful song. I hope many people read it and hear it. Maybe it will make people start to understand the sacrifice our troops and their families make.
You devil you. You could be famous - who’d ever heard of Daryl Worley before his 911 song. Course, it is all Country singers with the soldier/patriotic songs you hear.
Greyhawk,
Thanks for dropping by and for linking me in the Dawn Patrol.
devildog,
thanks for your kind words. I’m glad the song spoke to you. It is supposed to be a good, old-fashioned, American folk, tear jerker. It is also meant to express some of how much I value the service of our men and women in uniform. I’m glad that my intentions shone through to ya. My most sincere condolences on your nephew. Thank you for celebrating his service and not being embittered by his sacrifice.
toni,
Thanks for saying so, but I gave up any dreams of doing it for a living back in 1996 or so. I played probably 3 shows a week from 1990-1996. In living rooms, bar rooms, street corners, park benches, parking lots. My emphysema started to show up in force around 1996 and the quality of my voice changed (and worsened in my opinion) so I stopped working at it. Now I’m happy just writing and singing for me. Though I do plan on playing the Tumbleweed Folk Music Festival here in Washington State next year.
Ya know, it is always country or folk singers. Wonder why that is?
Wow. Gave me chills.
I am so proud of you! Your voice sounds great. I am going to put it on floppy. It was not only the words that touched me to the core of my being but also the passion behind the words. I love you.
Aiguo,
Thanks so much. That’s a great compliment, and I’m glad you enjoyed the song.
Mom,
Geez! Why don’t you let a fella know you are coming? I woulda spruced the place up. I’m glad you enjoyed the song, and I love you too.
Hi, Son (you’ve always been like one of my kids since PB, MO):
What a beautiful song and I have always loved your voice since grade school. You have a gift for sure. I LOVE your “conservative” viewpoints (could just be called “the truth”) and agree. I have forwarded this to Vince and Jamie and I’m sure they will be listening in, too, and writing.
John and I have just gotten back from a 4th of July Vietnam Veterans Reunion in San Francisco (the Company John served with 1968-69). Don’t know if you remember much about John’s service as a “bush” Corpsman with the 1st Marine Division in Vietnam for a year back before you kids were born.
We visited with some real heroes while there - many who received Purple Hearts, a couple Silver Stars and one even up for the Congressional Medal of Honor (highest) but received the Navy Cross (2nd highest honor). (If he had been killed during his heroic act, he would have gotten the Medal of Honor, but thankfully he was only wounded.) This hero went on to be #2 man in the FBI for many years. Our host and John’s best friend (Sarge) lost both legs and his right arm, but survived and came home to get 2 Masters Degrees, raise 4 kids, and heads up a disabled Vets org. on the West Coast and remains independent, driving himself to work everyday with his left arm as his only appendage. He is quite an inspiration! As they say, “All gave some - some gave all!” It was an honor to be with these heroes and to hear their stories. We support our troops and pray for them and have some friends serving right now in Iraq.
God bless you, B., and your family. Glad you are using your gift. I encourage you to continue. Thank you for serving us and our country - for your sacrifice and your courage.
God bless,
Linda H.
Linda,
Thanks so much for dropping by and for all of your kind words. I remember vividly the shirts that your kids wore that said “My Dad’s a Vietnam Vet and I’m Proud”. They wore those when it wasn’t exactly popular to be a Vietnam Vet. Good job Mom. Do tell John and all his buddies from 1st MarDiv thanks for me won’t you? The Vietnam Veterans set the standard for the guys from my generation to live up to, and I know I’m not the only paratrooper who thinks they did a slam bang job in the highest traditions of the service; no matter how many Winter Soldier lies get told.
Give my regards to Vince and Jamie and try not to attract too many hurricanes, OK?

Thanks and Great Work!!
JT
I’m going to pass this along to some people…..if I can see the keyboard. Something in my eye….
God Bless!
this is a beautiful song. I also agree with Don. something is in my eye…….
Bless you. Gonna pass it on as well.
Thanks for all of the nice comments and the links. Please feel free to pass it on and thanks for coming by.
There must be a serious bug going around, I’ve got it too! that’s a wonderfully touching song, please keep it up!
This is one of my new favorites! Mind if I link to it and spread the word?
It seems to me that milblogs msut cause some kind of dampening of the eye. Your song is a masterpiece. What an incredible continuum from W. Shakespeare to Stephen Ambrose. Western civilization has come a long way and men still have to defend it from evil. Thank you for sharing your heart with us and reflecting the strength of our protectors.
Dear Son,
I have listened every day to your song. I took it over to Aunt Shirley’s and her computer had terrible speakers but she and Aunt Sheila loved it. Dan said he always thought you were a great guitar player. He said one of the best he ever heard. I also cry everyday because I know if you could you would be that soldier. I love you.
Mom
A great and heartfelt song. Thank you.
I have had the pleasure of defending our nation’s values on several occassions and have know several (to many) fathers that did not come home to their “pretty ones”. Thank you for honoring them.

MOOOoooOOm! Not in front of the other kids!!
I’m glad the ‘home folks’ are enjoying it. Yes, I would be that soldier, even though I know you’re glad I’m not. But that ain’t the way it shook out, so now I do what I can. At least your little boy ain’t leaping from aircraft anymore. You know how mean those paratroopers can be.
I know the docs told you I was born 3 months early, but I’ll swear to God I was born 40 years late.
I’m a big boy now, so that means I’m not ashamed the littlest bit in saying “I love ya” right back. You can even drop me off in front of the other kids.
Doc.
Thank you. All I did was scribble some letters, you made it so I could. Allow me a quick story. Upon arrival at 4/325th AIR I had some trouble with the medics who lived in my barracks. I was disdainful of them after a certain incident. Months later I watched as those who I had disdained rose and evacuated men under intense fire.
There isn’t anything I won’t do for medics now.
bub, that is a beautiful song and very proud to have a brother who has such a good voice he could be famous, if you make a cd i would like a copy.
i love you -your sister autumn

Howdy Sis, thanks for dropping by and for the wonderfull compliments. Right back at ya
Michelle thanks for coming by and I’ll have to thank GreyHawk for steering you this way. I’m glad you liked the song, and hope your friend likes it as well.
Kevin, email sent, thanks for dropping by.
I’m going to have find where that Tumbleweed Folk Music Festival takes place. Would be great to hear you.
Lovely words. Had my share of tears and prayers for our Soldiers today.
This made me cry. It is incredible. Thank you for sharing it with all of us.
I heard about this song everywhere on the Blogosphere and finally got around to clicking on Homefront Six’s link (www.homefrontsix.blogspot.com) and I sat here and listened to it… and listened… and listened. It’s like I can’t stop listening. It is amazing.
Thanks so much, I’m glad you like d the song. Be advised that I have replaced the version you were listenign to with the original version. Most people have liked the older version better so you might like the song even more now.
Goldfalcon,
I loved your song and the sentiment behind it! I was raised in a military family where “God, Family and Country” really meant something in our home. It carries on today. My father is a Viet Nam vet, a fighter pilot. It took me many years to understand what the liberal folks were actually saying about my father’s time over there. The bottom line was this: He and other like him that carry on today, lay their lives down for our country and people like me, out here in Texas.
I pray for our troops and their families.
Y’all sacrifice so much for the sake of freedom!
God Bless you and your family.
Your song and your sacrifice are beautiful. We are forever indebted. May the good Lord bless you in every way.
Brian,
I have spent some time on your site this morning and heard your song. You have always been such a good writer and singer. It has been a long time. I hope we can chat some time. You have my email address now so drop me a line. I was just sitting here thinking about some of the things we did as kids together. That seems like so long ago. I pray that you continue to use your talents and I appreciate ALL of those who have fought for our freedom. God bless you and your beautiful family. Keep up the good work!
