Combat controllers are trained in air traffic control and to set up makeshift runways anywhere in the world. They are skilled in radio communications. Chapman was a military freefall parachutist, a static-line jumpmaster and a military scuba-diving supervisor.

”John, like all of our battlefield airmen, bring high tech to the battlefield, but they do it the old-fashioned way, with raw guts and courage and honor,” Gen. John P. Jumper said.

You can say that again, so a big ‘Airborne!’ tonight for all the guys with the funny blue badges over on Pope. And a special remembrance for TSgt John A. Chapman:father, brother, husband, son, warrior.
